Rules that apply in England

England

Listed buildings and conservation areas

In England, listed building consent from the council may be needed to replace historic glass such as crown or cylinder glass, or to alter glazing bars, sashes and frames. Historic England publishes guidance on traditional windows. Secondary glazing and window film are often easier to agree because they can be removed later, but the council's conservation officer makes the decision.

Glazing in workplaces

Regulation 14 of the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992 requires windows and transparent surfaces in walls, partitions, doors and gates to be of safety material or protected against breakage where health or safety makes that necessary, and to be marked so people notice them. The employer or the person in control of the premises decides what is needed through their risk assessment.

Safety glass in critical locations

In England, section 5 of Approved Document K treats glazing in doors and in side panels within 300 mm of a door edge, from floor level up to 1,500 mm, and any other glazing below 800 mm, as a critical location. Glass there should break safely, be robust, or be guarded. Laminated or toughened glass meeting BS EN 12600 class 3 is the usual answer, rising to class 2 for door and side-panel panes wider than 900 mm.

Security glazing in Hove: questions

Do you fit security glass in Hove?

Yes. We can arrange surveys and fitting in Hove and the BN3 area.

How much does security glass cost in Hove?

Our guide range for security glass for home windows in Hove is £162 to £474 including VAT (£135 to £395 plus VAT) per window, including fitting. The survey is free for new installations and your fixed price follows in writing.

Do you cover Brighton as well as Hove?

Yes. As well as Hove, we can arrange surveys in nearby Brighton, Portslade and Burgess Hill. Dates depend on installer availability.

My double glazing has misted. Can it be fixed?

The sealed unit needs replacing. The frame stays, and the new unit can include a laminated pane for security.

Is security film as good as laminated glass?

Film helps hold broken glass together and slows an attack, but laminated glass gives a higher, tested level of resistance and lasts as long as the window.
