Rules that apply in England

England

Safety glass in critical locations

In England, section 5 of Approved Document K treats glazing in doors and in side panels within 300 mm of a door edge, from floor level up to 1,500 mm, and any other glazing below 800 mm, as a critical location. Glass there should break safely, be robust, or be guarded. Laminated or toughened glass meeting BS EN 12600 class 3 is the usual answer, rising to class 2 for door and side-panel panes wider than 900 mm.

Listed buildings and conservation areas

In England, listed building consent from the council may be needed to replace historic glass such as crown or cylinder glass, or to alter glazing bars, sashes and frames. Historic England publishes guidance on traditional windows. Secondary glazing and window film are often easier to agree because they can be removed later, but the council's conservation officer makes the decision.

Security rules for new homes

Approved Document Q has applied to new homes in England since 1 October 2015. Easily accessible doors and windows, meaning any part within 2 m vertically of the ground or another accessible surface, should meet PAS 24 or an equivalent, and glazing in doors and in windows within 400 mm of a door should be laminated to at least BS EN 356 P1A. It does not apply when you change the glass in an existing home, although it is a sensible benchmark.

Security glazing in Blackpool: questions

Do you fit security glass in Blackpool?

Yes. We can arrange surveys and fitting in Blackpool and the FY1 area.

How much does security glass cost in Blackpool?

As a guide, allow £162 to £474 including VAT (£135 to £395 plus VAT) per window for security glass for home windows in Blackpool, supplied and fitted. Size, glass makeup, access and frame condition move the price, which is confirmed in writing after the free survey.

Do you cover Thornton-Cleveleys as well as Blackpool?

Yes. As well as Blackpool, we can arrange surveys in nearby Thornton-Cleveleys, Lytham St Annes and Fleetwood. Dates depend on installer availability.

How long before my glass is fitted?

Security glass is made to measure after the survey. We confirm the lead time with your quote.

Is security film as good as laminated glass?

Film helps hold broken glass together and slows an attack, but laminated glass gives a higher, tested level of resistance and lasts as long as the window.
