Safety glass in critical locations
In Scotland, standard 4.8 of the Building Standards technical handbooks covers glazing at risk of human impact. Panes within 800 mm of floor level, in a door leaf, or within 300 mm of a door leaf and up to 1.5 m above the floor should resist impact in line with BS 6262-4, or be guarded. Laminated and toughened glass are the usual ways to meet it.
Planning permission
Under the Scottish planning system the council decides whether a new or altered shopfront needs planning permission; changing the glass in an existing frame usually does not. Bollards or barriers in a road or footway need consent from the roads authority, which is normally the council.
Security rules for new homes
Standard 4.13 asks for doors and windows in new homes that are vulnerable to unlawful entry to be secure. Glazing that would let someone reach a lock from outside should be laminated or similarly robust, and easily accessible openable windows need a keyed lock or a keyless lock with laminated glass. It applies through the building warrant for new homes and conversions.
Security glazing in Edinburgh: questions
Do you fit security glass in Edinburgh?
Yes. We can arrange surveys and fitting in Edinburgh and the EH1 area.
How much does security glass cost in Edinburgh?
As a guide, allow £162 to £474 including VAT (£135 to £395 plus VAT) per window for security glass for home windows in Edinburgh, supplied and fitted. Size, glass makeup, access and frame condition move the price, which is confirmed in writing after the free survey.
Do you cover Musselburgh as well as Edinburgh?
Yes. As well as Edinburgh, we can arrange surveys in nearby Musselburgh, Dalkeith and Penicuik. Dates depend on installer availability.
Does a listed building need consent to change glass?
It can. Historic glass is part of a listed building's character, so check with the council's conservation officer first.
What is the difference between laminated and toughened glass?
Toughened glass is stronger but breaks into small pieces and leaves an open hole. Laminated glass cracks but stays in the frame, which is why it is the choice for security.
