Rules that apply in Scotland
Glazing in workplaces
Regulation 14 of the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992 applies in Scotland. Windows and transparent surfaces in walls, partitions, doors and gates must be of safety material or protected against breakage where health or safety requires it, and marked so people see them. The duty holder's risk assessment decides where.
Security rules for new homes
Standard 4.13 asks for doors and windows in new homes that are vulnerable to unlawful entry to be secure. Glazing that would let someone reach a lock from outside should be laminated or similarly robust, and easily accessible openable windows need a keyed lock or a keyless lock with laminated glass. It applies through the building warrant for new homes and conversions.
Listed buildings and conservation areas
Listed buildings in Scotland need listed building consent from the council for works affecting their character, which can include historic glass, glazing bars and sash windows. Historic Environment Scotland is consulted on some cases and publishes guidance on traditional windows. Conservation areas bring extra scrutiny of shopfronts and external changes.
