Laminated glass retrofit in Brighton: what will it cost?
As a guide, allow £174 to £534 including VAT (£145 to £445 plus VAT) per pane for laminated glass retrofit in Brighton, supplied and fitted. Size, glass makeup, access and frame condition move the price, which is confirmed in writing after the free survey.
A laminated glass retrofit replaces the glass in frames you already have with laminated glass or laminated sealed units, so an existing building gets much more resistance to break-in without the cost and disruption of new windows. It suits homes, offices and shops where the frames are still sound.
Choices you can make
- Survey of every frame before ordering
- Matched to existing rebate depth and beads
- Pane-by-pane record of glass fitted
- Security tape and bead clips where needed
- Phased work by elevation or floor
- Hinge, stay and roller adjustment after fitting
Fitting in Brighton and nearby
We can arrange laminated glass retrofit across Brighton, the main centre for East Sussex, and in nearby towns including Hove, Portslade and Burgess Hill.
East Sussex mixes the Regency bow-fronted terraces and busy shopping lanes of Brighton and Hove with Victorian seafronts in Eastbourne and Hastings and historic Lewes and Rye.
Typical settings for laminated glass retrofit:
- Offices with older glazing
- Homes with sound uPVC or aluminium windows
- Shops wanting more security without a new frontage
- Buildings where frames are too new to replace
Getting the right glass for your building
Phasing and budget
Retrofits phase easily. You can upgrade the riskiest panes now and the rest later.
Frame condition
If a frame is too shallow, damaged or weak, we will say so rather than fit heavier glass into it.
What the rules say in England
Security rules for new homes
Approved Document Q has applied to new homes in England since 1 October 2015. Easily accessible doors and windows, meaning any part within 2 m vertically of the ground or another accessible surface, should meet PAS 24 or an equivalent, and glazing in doors and in windows within 400 mm of a door should be laminated to at least BS EN 356 P1A. It does not apply when you change the glass in an existing home, although it is a sensible benchmark.
Safety glass in critical locations
In England, section 5 of Approved Document K treats glazing in doors and in side panels within 300 mm of a door edge, from floor level up to 1,500 mm, and any other glazing below 800 mm, as a critical location. Glass there should break safely, be robust, or be guarded. Laminated or toughened glass meeting BS EN 12600 class 3 is the usual answer, rising to class 2 for door and side-panel panes wider than 900 mm.

Laminated glass retrofit in Brighton: questions
Which areas near Brighton do you cover?
We can arrange work in Brighton and in nearby Hove (1 mile), Portslade (3 miles) and Burgess Hill (9 miles). Dates depend on installer availability.
Is retrofitting cheaper than new windows?
Usually, yes, because frames, plastering and making good are not involved. It only makes sense where the frames are sound.
Do I need permission to change the glass?
Changing glass in existing frames is generally treated as a repair. Listed buildings may still need listed building consent, so check with the council.
Will laminated glass fit my frames?
Most modern frames can take a laminated unit of the same overall thickness. We check the rebate depth and beads at the survey.
