Rules that apply in England

England

Security rules for new homes

Approved Document Q has applied to new homes in England since 1 October 2015. Easily accessible doors and windows, meaning any part within 2 m vertically of the ground or another accessible surface, should meet PAS 24 or an equivalent, and glazing in doors and in windows within 400 mm of a door should be laminated to at least BS EN 356 P1A. It does not apply when you change the glass in an existing home, although it is a sensible benchmark.

Safety glass in critical locations

In England, section 5 of Approved Document K treats glazing in doors and in side panels within 300 mm of a door edge, from floor level up to 1,500 mm, and any other glazing below 800 mm, as a critical location. Glass there should break safely, be robust, or be guarded. Laminated or toughened glass meeting BS EN 12600 class 3 is the usual answer, rising to class 2 for door and side-panel panes wider than 900 mm.

Glazing in workplaces

Regulation 14 of the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992 requires windows and transparent surfaces in walls, partitions, doors and gates to be of safety material or protected against breakage where health or safety makes that necessary, and to be marked so people notice them. The employer or the person in control of the premises decides what is needed through their risk assessment.

Yes. We can arrange surveys and fitting in Mansfield and the NG18 area.

How much does security glass cost in Mansfield?

Expect £162 to £474 including VAT (£135 to £395 plus VAT) per window for security glass for home windows in Mansfield. The written quote names the glass makeup, the price and the lead time before you commit.

Can you survey in Mansfield and nearby towns?

Yes. Surveys in Mansfield, Sutton-in-Ashfield and Hucknall are booked around installer availability.

What is the difference between laminated and toughened glass?

Toughened glass is stronger but breaks into small pieces and leaves an open hole. Laminated glass cracks but stays in the frame, which is why it is the choice for security.

Does a listed building need consent to change glass?

It can. Historic glass is part of a listed building's character, so check with the council's conservation officer first.
