Rules that apply in England

England

Replacing glass in an existing frame

Replacing only the glass or sealed unit in an existing frame is generally treated as a repair in England rather than notifiable building work. Replacing a whole window or door is notifiable and is normally certified through a competent person scheme or approved by building control. Either way, new glass in a critical location should still be safety glass.

Security rules for new homes

Approved Document Q has applied to new homes in England since 1 October 2015. Easily accessible doors and windows, meaning any part within 2 m vertically of the ground or another accessible surface, should meet PAS 24 or an equivalent, and glazing in doors and in windows within 400 mm of a door should be laminated to at least BS EN 356 P1A. It does not apply when you change the glass in an existing home, although it is a sensible benchmark.

Listed buildings and conservation areas

In England, listed building consent from the council may be needed to replace historic glass such as crown or cylinder glass, or to alter glazing bars, sashes and frames. Historic England publishes guidance on traditional windows. Secondary glazing and window film are often easier to agree because they can be removed later, but the council's conservation officer makes the decision.

Security glazing in Wimbledon: questions

Do you fit security glass in Wimbledon?

Yes. We can arrange surveys and fitting in Wimbledon and the SW19 area.

How much does security glass cost in Wimbledon?

Guide prices for security glass for home windows in Wimbledon are £162 to £474 including VAT (£135 to £395 plus VAT) per window for supply and fitting. We confirm a fixed price in writing after a free survey, before any glass is ordered.

Which areas near Wimbledon do you cover?

We can arrange work in Wimbledon and in nearby Morden (2 miles), Mitcham (2 miles) and Putney (3 miles). Dates depend on installer availability.

Is the survey free?

Yes, for new installations. Broken glass replacement and bead security visits are charged, and the price is confirmed before we attend. For broken glass, the visit charge is deducted from the price if you go ahead with the replacement.

Is security film as good as laminated glass?

Film helps hold broken glass together and slows an attack, but laminated glass gives a higher, tested level of resistance and lasts as long as the window.
