Rules that apply in England

England

Safety glass in critical locations

In England, section 5 of Approved Document K treats glazing in doors and in side panels within 300 mm of a door edge, from floor level up to 1,500 mm, and any other glazing below 800 mm, as a critical location. Glass there should break safely, be robust, or be guarded. Laminated or toughened glass meeting BS EN 12600 class 3 is the usual answer, rising to class 2 for door and side-panel panes wider than 900 mm.

Planning permission

Changing the glass in an existing window or shopfront does not usually need planning permission, because the building looks much the same afterwards. A new or altered shopfront, or security features added to the outside of a building, may need planning permission from the council. Bollards or barriers on the pavement need the highway authority's consent, which is normally the council.

Security rules for new homes

Approved Document Q has applied to new homes in England since 1 October 2015. Easily accessible doors and windows, meaning any part within 2 m vertically of the ground or another accessible surface, should meet PAS 24 or an equivalent, and glazing in doors and in windows within 400 mm of a door should be laminated to at least BS EN 356 P1A. It does not apply when you change the glass in an existing home, although it is a sensible benchmark.

Security glazing in Yate: questions

Do you fit security glass in Yate?

Yes. We can arrange surveys and fitting in Yate and the BS37 area.

How much does security glass cost in Yate?

As a guide, allow £162 to £474 including VAT (£135 to £395 plus VAT) per window for security glass for home windows in Yate, supplied and fitted. Size, glass makeup, access and frame condition move the price, which is confirmed in writing after the free survey.

Do you cover Mangotsfield as well as Yate?

Yes. As well as Yate, we can arrange surveys in nearby Mangotsfield, Bristol and Bath. Dates depend on installer availability.

How long before my glass is fitted?

Security glass is made to measure after the survey. We confirm the lead time with your quote.

What is the difference between laminated and toughened glass?

Toughened glass is stronger but breaks into small pieces and leaves an open hole. Laminated glass cracks but stays in the frame, which is why it is the choice for security.
