Security secondary glazing is a separate slim window fitted on the room side of an existing window, glazed with laminated glass so it forms a second barrier. It leaves the original window untouched outside, which makes it a common choice for listed buildings, conservation areas and period sash windows.
Choices you can make
- Vertical sliding, horizontal sliding, hinged and lift-out styles
- Low-E glass for better insulation
- Locks and catches that open from inside without a key
- Colour-matched frames to suit the room
- Noise and draught reduction
- Fixed within the reveal, leaving the original window untouched

What to think about first
How it opens
Match the opening style to the original window so both can be opened, cleaned and used for ventilation.
Escape and ventilation
On windows used for escape, the secondary glazing must open quickly from inside without a key or tool.
Consents and safety: Northern Ireland
Planning permission
Planning in Northern Ireland is handled by the eleven councils, which decide whether a new or altered shopfront needs permission; changing the glass in an existing frame usually does not. Bollards or barriers on a public footway need consent from the Department for Infrastructure's roads service.
Windows needed for escape
Fire safety in new building work in Northern Ireland is covered by the Building Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2012 and Technical Booklet E. Where a room relies on a window for escape, locks, secondary glazing and film must leave it able to open. Laminated glass is not designed to be broken out.

Security secondary glazing in Derry: questions
Do you cover Strabane as well as Derry?
Yes. As well as Derry, we can arrange work in nearby Strabane. Dates depend on installer availability.
Will secondary glazing cause condensation?
A well-fitted unit usually reduces condensation on the inner pane. Some ventilation of the gap may be needed, which we discuss at the survey.
Can I still open my sash windows?
Yes. Secondary glazing slides, hinges or lifts out so the original window can be opened and cleaned.
Does secondary glazing reduce noise?
Yes, often noticeably, because of the air gap between the two panes. Laminated glass helps further.
