Security glass for home windows in Crowborough: what will it cost?

Our guide range for security glass for home windows in Crowborough is £162 to £474 including VAT (£135 to £395 plus VAT) per window, including fitting. The survey is free for new installations and your fixed price follows in writing.

Security glass for home windows means replacing the glass in your existing frames with laminated glass or sealed units that have a laminated pane. The windows look and open exactly as before, but breaking the glass becomes a slow, noisy job rather than a quick way into the house.

What you can specify

  • Frames, handles and locks left in place
  • Works with uPVC, aluminium and timber frames
  • Same overall thickness as your current units where possible
  • Obscure glass for bathrooms and landings
  • Laminated inner pane in new sealed units
  • Low-E glass and argon to keep rooms warm

Fitting in Crowborough and nearby

We arrange surveys and fitting in Crowborough and across the TN6 postcode district, as well as in nearby Tunbridge Wells (7 miles) and East Grinstead (9 miles). Dates depend on installer availability.

East Sussex mixes the Regency bow-fronted terraces and busy shopping lanes of Brighton and Hove with Victorian seafronts in Eastbourne and Hastings and historic Lewes and Rye.

Typical settings for security glass for home windows:

  • Bungalows, where every window is at ground level

Getting the right glass for your building

Which windows first

Start with windows that can be reached without a ladder and are out of sight from the street. We can schedule the rest for later.

Beads inside or out

Externally beaded windows can have the glass removed from outside. We fit security tape or clips so that route is closed.

What the rules say in England

England

Windows needed for escape

Approved Document B expects many habitable rooms in houses, particularly upstairs, to have an escape window with a clear opening of at least 0.33 m², at least 450 mm high and 450 mm wide, with the bottom of the opening no more than 1,100 mm above the floor. Changing the glass does not alter that, but locks, secondary glazing and film must not stop the window opening. Laminated glass is hard to break through, so escape always relies on the window opening.

Safety glass in critical locations

In England, section 5 of Approved Document K treats glazing in doors and in side panels within 300 mm of a door edge, from floor level up to 1,500 mm, and any other glazing below 800 mm, as a critical location. Glass there should break safely, be robust, or be guarded. Laminated or toughened glass meeting BS EN 12600 class 3 is the usual answer, rising to class 2 for door and side-panel panes wider than 900 mm.

Security glass for home windows in Crowborough: questions

Do you cover Tunbridge Wells as well as Crowborough?

Yes. As well as Crowborough, we can arrange surveys in nearby Tunbridge Wells, East Grinstead and Tonbridge. Dates depend on installer availability.

Will security glass make my home warmer or colder?

Choosing low-E glass, argon fill and warm-edge spacers usually matches or beats older units, so most people notice no change or an improvement.

Does replacing the glass need building regulations approval?

Replacing glass in an existing frame is generally treated as a repair. Replacing whole windows is controlled work: notifiable in England and Wales, and in Scotland and Northern Ireland the council's building control can say whether approval is needed. New glass in a critical location should still be safety glass.

Can you match my obscure bathroom glass?

We can usually match common obscure patterns, or fit a laminated obscure glass with a similar look.
