Getting the right glass for your building

Which class

Most shops do well with P2A to P4A. Jewellers and other high-value trades usually need P6B or above, often because their insurer says so.

Glass or frame first

If the frame is shallow or light, upgrading the glass alone moves the weak point to the frame. We price both so you can decide.

What the rules say in England

England

Safety glass in critical locations

In England, section 5 of Approved Document K treats glazing in doors and in side panels within 300 mm of a door edge, from floor level up to 1,500 mm, and any other glazing below 800 mm, as a critical location. Glass there should break safely, be robust, or be guarded. Laminated or toughened glass meeting BS EN 12600 class 3 is the usual answer, rising to class 2 for door and side-panel panes wider than 900 mm.

Glazing in workplaces

Regulation 14 of the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992 requires windows and transparent surfaces in walls, partitions, doors and gates to be of safety material or protected against breakage where health or safety makes that necessary, and to be marked so people notice them. The employer or the person in control of the premises decides what is needed through their risk assessment.

Shopfront security glass in Peterlee: questions

Can you survey in Peterlee and nearby towns?

Yes. Surveys in Peterlee, Seaham and Hartlepool are booked around installer availability.

Do I need planning permission to change shop glass?

Replacing glass in an existing shopfront does not normally need planning permission. Changing the shopfront design, adding external shutters or altering a listed building usually does.

Is my shop window toughened or laminated?

Look for the safety mark in a corner of the pane, or ask us to check at the survey. Many older shopfronts are toughened, which breaks completely and leaves the window open.

Can you fit the glass without closing the shop?

Usually. We plan early or after-closing slots where an installer is available, and keep the opening secure during the work.
