What should security double-glazed units cost in Longton?

Budget £174 to £594 including VAT (£145 to £495 plus VAT) per unit for security double-glazed units in Longton, supplied and fitted. Larger panes, thicker makeups and difficult access cost more; the price is fixed in writing after the survey.

A security double-glazed unit is a sealed unit in which one or both panes are laminated glass, usually the inner pane, so the window keeps its insulation but resists being broken through. It fits the same frame as a standard unit and is the simplest way to add security to modern windows and doors.

What you can specify

  • Security glazing tape or clips where beads are external
  • Warm-edge spacer bars in black, grey or white
  • Obscure and decorative glass for bathrooms and doors
  • Low-E coating and argon fill for insulation
  • Toughened outer pane where safety glass is required
  • Laminated inner pane, outer pane or both

Fitting in Longton and nearby

We arrange surveys and fitting in Longton and across the ST3 postcode district, as well as in nearby Stoke-on-Trent (3 miles) and Newcastle-under-Lyme (4 miles). Dates depend on installer availability.

Staffordshire mixes Stoke-on-Trent's Victorian pottery-town terraces with Lichfield's cathedral quarter, Burton's brewery streets and newer estates around Tamworth and Cannock.

Good candidates for security double-glazed units:

  • Ground-floor and basement windows
  • Windows in flats on walkways and balconies
  • Replacing misted or damaged units
  • Patio doors and bifolds

Energy performance

Choosing low-E glass, argon and warm-edge spacers keeps the window as efficient as possible, often better than the unit being replaced.

Overall thickness

The new unit must suit the frame's glazing rebate. If your frames only take thin units, we use thinner laminates or adjust the beads.

Glazing rules in England

England

Security rules for new homes

Approved Document Q has applied to new homes in England since 1 October 2015. Easily accessible doors and windows, meaning any part within 2 m vertically of the ground or another accessible surface, should meet PAS 24 or an equivalent, and glazing in doors and in windows within 400 mm of a door should be laminated to at least BS EN 356 P1A. It does not apply when you change the glass in an existing home, although it is a sensible benchmark.

Safety glass in critical locations

In England, section 5 of Approved Document K treats glazing in doors and in side panels within 300 mm of a door edge, from floor level up to 1,500 mm, and any other glazing below 800 mm, as a critical location. Glass there should break safely, be robust, or be guarded. Laminated or toughened glass meeting BS EN 12600 class 3 is the usual answer, rising to class 2 for door and side-panel panes wider than 900 mm.

Security double-glazed units in Longton: questions

Do you cover Stoke-on-Trent as well as Longton?

Yes. As well as Longton, we can arrange surveys in nearby Stoke-on-Trent, Newcastle-under-Lyme and Kidsgrove. Dates depend on installer availability.

Do security units reduce noise?

Laminated glass already damps sound better than plain glass, and acoustic interlayers improve it further, which helps on busy roads.

How long do new units take?

Units are made to order after the survey. Lead times vary with glass type and size, and we confirm them when we quote.

Will a laminated unit be heavier?

A little. A laminated pane weighs about the same as a solid sheet of the same thickness. On large opening sashes we check hinges and friction stays.
