Laminated security glass is made by bonding two or more sheets of glass to a plastic interlayer, usually PVB, under heat and pressure. When it is struck the glass cracks but the fragments stay stuck to the interlayer, so the pane keeps filling the opening and has to be attacked again and again before anyone can get through.

Choices you can make

PVB interlayers from 0.38 mm to 1.52 mm, or stiffer ionoplast interlayers
Blocks most UV light, which slows fading of furniture and stock
Single panes or the inner or outer pane of a sealed unit
Breaks safely, meeting impact classes used for critical locations
Edges sealed and glazed to suit timber, uPVC, aluminium and steel frames
Classes from P1A to P5A under BS EN 356, with heavier P6B to P8B options

Things to decide before you order

Clear or special glass

Low-iron glass removes the green tint on thick panes, acoustic interlayers cut road noise, and obscure versions give privacy for bathrooms and side panels.

Which security class

P2A suits most homes and many offices. Higher-risk shops, stockrooms and cash areas usually move up to P4A, or to the anti-bandit P6B to P8B classes.

Insurer requirements

Insurers in Wales, as elsewhere, can set conditions for premises, stock and cash, sometimes naming a BS EN 356 class for shop or counter glass. Get the policy wording in writing before ordering. The insurer decides whether the glass meets it, and the glass manufacturer's test evidence comes with our quote.

Security rules for new homes

Wales introduced its own Approved Document Q for new homes, in force from 1 November 2018, and it applies to newly erected dwellings only. It follows a similar approach to England's, with PAS 24 referenced for easily accessible doors and windows and laminated glass to BS EN 356 P1A in doors and nearby windows. It does not apply to changing the glass in an existing home.

Laminated security glass in Merthyr Tydfil: questions

Which areas near Merthyr Tydfil do you cover?

We can arrange work in Merthyr Tydfil and in nearby Aberdare (4 miles), Rhondda (7 miles) and Ebbw Vale (8 miles). Dates depend on installer availability.

Will laminated glass fit my existing windows?

Usually. A laminated pane or a sealed unit with a laminated inner pane is made to the same overall thickness as your current glass where the frame allows. We check rebate depth, beads and hinges first.

Does laminated glass stop burglars completely?

No glass makes a building impossible to enter. Laminated glass makes breaking in slow, noisy and hard work, which makes the building a much poorer target for an opportunist. Higher classes and stronger frames add more delay.

Can laminated glass be cut to size?

Yes. Unlike toughened glass, laminated glass can be cut after it is made, which helps with odd shapes and quick replacements. The edges are finished and kept dry in the frame to protect the interlayer.
