What is the price of security glass for home windows in Lincoln?

Budget £162 to £474 including VAT (£135 to £395 plus VAT) per window for security glass for home windows in Lincoln, supplied and fitted. Larger panes, thicker makeups and difficult access cost more; the price is fixed in writing after the survey.

Security glass for home windows means replacing the glass in your existing frames with laminated glass or sealed units that have a laminated pane. The windows look and open exactly as before, but breaking the glass becomes a slow, noisy job rather than a quick way into the house.

What goes into security glass for home windows

  • Obscure glass for bathrooms and landings
  • Security tape or clips on externally beaded windows
  • Works with uPVC, aluminium and timber frames
  • Laminated inner pane in new sealed units
  • Toughened outer pane where safety glass is required
  • Low-E glass and argon to keep rooms warm

Questions we will ask at the survey

Keep or replace frames

If the frames are sound, new glass is the cheaper upgrade. If they are failing, we will tell you so you can compare with new windows.

Which windows first

Start with windows that can be reached without a ladder and are out of sight from the street. We can schedule the rest for later.

Building regulations and safety in England

England

Windows needed for escape

Approved Document B expects many habitable rooms in houses, particularly upstairs, to have an escape window with a clear opening of at least 0.33 m², at least 450 mm high and 450 mm wide, with the bottom of the opening no more than 1,100 mm above the floor. Changing the glass does not alter that, but locks, secondary glazing and film must not stop the window opening. Laminated glass is hard to break through, so escape always relies on the window opening.

Safety glass in critical locations

In England, section 5 of Approved Document K treats glazing in doors and in side panels within 300 mm of a door edge, from floor level up to 1,500 mm, and any other glazing below 800 mm, as a critical location. Glass there should break safely, be robust, or be guarded. Laminated or toughened glass meeting BS EN 12600 class 3 is the usual answer, rising to class 2 for door and side-panel panes wider than 900 mm.

Security glass for home windows in Lincoln: questions

Can you survey in Lincoln and nearby towns?

Yes. Surveys in Lincoln, Gainsborough and Newark-on-Trent are booked around installer availability.

Can you match my obscure bathroom glass?

We can usually match common obscure patterns, or fit a laminated obscure glass with a similar look.

Does replacing the glass need building regulations approval?

Replacing glass in an existing frame is generally treated as a repair. Replacing whole windows is controlled work: notifiable in England and Wales, and in Scotland and Northern Ireland the council's building control can say whether approval is needed. New glass in a critical location should still be safety glass.

Which windows do burglars target?

Mostly ground-floor windows at the back and side, and windows that can be reached from flat roofs or walls. Those are the ones we suggest upgrading first.
