What should security glass for home windows cost in Croydon?

Guide prices for security glass for home windows in Croydon are £162 to £474 including VAT (£135 to £395 plus VAT) per window for supply and fitting. We confirm a fixed price in writing after a free survey, before any glass is ordered.

Security glass for home windows means replacing the glass in your existing frames with laminated glass or sealed units that have a laminated pane. The windows look and open exactly as before, but breaking the glass becomes a slow, noisy job rather than a quick way into the house.

What you can specify

  • Security tape or clips on externally beaded windows
  • Frames, handles and locks left in place
  • Obscure glass for bathrooms and landings
  • Same overall thickness as your current units where possible
  • Laminated inner pane in new sealed units
  • Low-E glass and argon to keep rooms warm

Fitting in Croydon and nearby

We arrange surveys and fitting in Croydon and across the CR0 postcode district, as well as in nearby South Croydon (1 mile) and Wallington (3 miles). Dates depend on installer availability.

Greater London has every kind of glazing, from Georgian sashes and Victorian bays in conservation areas to high-street shopfronts, office curtain walling and new-build flats.

Good candidates for security glass for home windows:

  • Flats on walkways and balconies
  • Basement and lower-ground windows
  • Ground-floor windows at the back of the house
  • Windows beside flat roofs, porches and extensions

Before the glass is ordered

Keep or replace frames

If the frames are sound, new glass is the cheaper upgrade. If they are failing, we will tell you so you can compare with new windows.

Which windows first

Start with windows that can be reached without a ladder and are out of sight from the street. We can schedule the rest for later.

Glazing rules in England

England

Safety glass in critical locations

In England, section 5 of Approved Document K treats glazing in doors and in side panels within 300 mm of a door edge, from floor level up to 1,500 mm, and any other glazing below 800 mm, as a critical location. Glass there should break safely, be robust, or be guarded. Laminated or toughened glass meeting BS EN 12600 class 3 is the usual answer, rising to class 2 for door and side-panel panes wider than 900 mm.

Windows needed for escape

Approved Document B expects many habitable rooms in houses, particularly upstairs, to have an escape window with a clear opening of at least 0.33 m², at least 450 mm high and 450 mm wide, with the bottom of the opening no more than 1,100 mm above the floor. Changing the glass does not alter that, but locks, secondary glazing and film must not stop the window opening. Laminated glass is hard to break through, so escape always relies on the window opening.

Security glass for home windows in Croydon: questions

Do you cover South Croydon as well as Croydon?

Yes. As well as Croydon, we can arrange surveys in nearby South Croydon, Wallington and Carshalton. Dates depend on installer availability.

Can you match my obscure bathroom glass?

We can usually match common obscure patterns, or fit a laminated obscure glass with a similar look.

Do I need new windows to get security glass?

No. If your frames are in good condition, we replace just the glass with laminated units made to fit them.

Does replacing the glass need building regulations approval?

Replacing glass in an existing frame is generally treated as a repair. Replacing whole windows is controlled work: notifiable in England and Wales, and in Scotland and Northern Ireland the council's building control can say whether approval is needed. New glass in a critical location should still be safety glass.
