What should security glass for home windows cost in Dorset?

Security glass for home windows means replacing the glass in your existing frames with laminated glass or sealed units that have a laminated pane. The windows look and open exactly as before, but breaking the glass becomes a slow, noisy job rather than a quick way into the house.

Glass and fitting options

  • Laminated inner pane in new sealed units
  • Security tape or clips on externally beaded windows
  • Low-E glass and argon to keep rooms warm
  • Works with uPVC, aluminium and timber frames
  • Obscure glass for bathrooms and landings
  • Toughened outer pane where safety glass is required

Laminated inner or both panes

A laminated inner pane suits most homes. Laminating both panes adds protection on hidden elevations.

Beads inside or out

Externally beaded windows can have the glass removed from outside. We fit security tape or clips so that route is closed.

Glazing rules in England

England

Safety glass in critical locations

In England, section 5 of Approved Document K treats glazing in doors and in side panels within 300 mm of a door edge, from floor level up to 1,500 mm, and any other glazing below 800 mm, as a critical location. Glass there should break safely, be robust, or be guarded. Laminated or toughened glass meeting BS EN 12600 class 3 is the usual answer, rising to class 2 for door and side-panel panes wider than 900 mm.

Windows needed for escape

Approved Document B expects many habitable rooms in houses, particularly upstairs, to have an escape window with a clear opening of at least 0.33 m², at least 450 mm high and 450 mm wide, with the bottom of the opening no more than 1,100 mm above the floor. Changing the glass does not alter that, but locks, secondary glazing and film must not stop the window opening. Laminated glass is hard to break through, so escape always relies on the window opening.

How it works

  1. Tell us about the glazing
  2. Survey, measuring and frame check
  3. Written quote naming the glass
  4. Fitting and handover

Security glass for home windows in Dorset: questions

Which towns in Dorset do you cover?

We can arrange work anywhere in Dorset, including Bournemouth, Poole, Weymouth, Christchurch and Bridport, and in other towns across the area.

Do I need new windows to get security glass?

No. If your frames are in good condition, we replace just the glass with laminated units made to fit them.

Which windows do burglars target?

Mostly ground-floor windows at the back and side, and windows that can be reached from flat roofs or walls. Those are the ones we suggest upgrading first.

Does replacing the glass need building regulations approval?

Replacing glass in an existing frame is generally treated as a repair. Replacing whole windows is controlled work: notifiable in England and Wales, and in Scotland and Northern Ireland the council's building control can say whether approval is needed. New glass in a critical location should still be safety glass.
