Security glass for doors replaces the glazed panel in a front, back or side door with laminated safety glass, usually in a sealed unit with a toughened outer pane. It stops the common trick of breaking the glass to reach in and turn a key or thumb-turn left in the lock.
What goes into security glass for doors
- Clear, obscure and decorative designs
- Safety glass suitable for critical locations
- Laminated backing for leaded and bevelled panels
- Glass for side panels and fanlights beside the door
- Internal beads or security tape so glass is much harder to remove from outside
- Composite door cassettes where available

Powys is rural, with small market towns such as Brecon, Newtown, Welshpool and Llandrindod Wells, Victorian and stone buildings, and farmhouses and holiday lets some way from main roads.
Common uses:
- Doors with a thumb-turn lock near the glass
- Front doors with glazed side panels
- Flat entrance doors with vision panels
- Kitchen and utility doors onto the garden
What to think about first
Keep the design
Most decorative glass can be copied or rebuilt with a laminated backing pane, so the door looks the same.
Thumb-turns and keys
Laminated glass makes reaching a thumb-turn far harder. Keeping keys away from the door helps too.
Consents and safety: Wales
Fire-rated glass is different
Glass in fire doors and fire screens must be fire-rated glass tested as part of that door or screen, under Approved Document B for Wales and, in non-domestic premises, the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005. Security and laminated glass are not fire-rated unless the product is tested for it, so the two cannot simply be swapped.
Security rules for new homes
Wales introduced its own Approved Document Q for new homes, in force from 1 November 2018, and it applies to newly erected dwellings only. It follows a similar approach to England's, with PAS 24 referenced for easily accessible doors and windows and laminated glass to BS EN 356 P1A in doors and nearby windows. It does not apply to changing the glass in an existing home.

Security glass for doors in Welshpool: questions
Do you cover Newtown as well as Welshpool?
Yes. As well as Welshpool, we can arrange work in nearby Newtown. Dates depend on installer availability.
Is toughened glass enough for a door?
It meets the safety rule but not the security need, because a broken toughened pane falls out. A laminated pane meets both.
Does door glass have to be safety glass?
Yes. Glass in doors up to 1,500 mm from the floor, and in side panels within 300 mm of the door edge, counts as a critical location and needs safety glass or protection.
Can you keep my stained or leaded glass design?
Usually. We add a laminated pane behind the decorative glass inside the sealed unit, or have a matching unit made.
