Keep the design

Most decorative glass can be copied or rebuilt with a laminated backing pane, so the door looks the same.

Composite door glass

Some composite doors use a cassette made by the door's maker. We check whether a laminated version is available before quoting.

Glazing rules in Northern Ireland

Northern Ireland

Replacing glass in an existing frame

Building regulations in Northern Ireland are administered by the eleven councils' building control services. Replacing only the glass in an existing frame is generally treated as a repair, while replacing whole windows or doors can be controlled work, so check with building control first. New glass in a critical location should be safety glass under Part V.

Security rules for new homes

If you are building a new home in Northern Ireland, ask the council's building control service which security requirements apply. In existing homes nothing obliges you to upgrade glass, but laminated glass to BS EN 356 P1A in doors and in windows beside them is a common benchmark taken from guidance in Great Britain.

Security glass for doors in Strabane: questions

Do you cover Derry as well as Strabane?

Yes. As well as Strabane, we can arrange work in nearby Derry. Dates depend on installer availability.

Is toughened glass enough for a door?

It meets the safety rule but not the security need, because a broken toughened pane falls out. A laminated pane meets both.

Can you replace glass in a composite door?

Often. Some composite doors take a standard unit; others use the maker's own cassette, which we source where possible.

Does door glass have to be safety glass?

Yes. Glass in doors up to 1,500 mm from the floor, and in side panels within 300 mm of the door edge, counts as a critical location and needs safety glass or protection.
